the thing about having just one day per week “free for wandering” is that we’ve learned to ‘pack a lot in’ – last week we visited one of our favorite haunts – newport ri – a place we have spent a great deal of time in the past – racing in regattas – relaxing – and always, a ride on the rum runner.
started the day with a coffee (the coffee grinder on bowen’s wharf is a great spot – and very newport-y) and a nice ride to fort adams, around ocean drive and down bellevue back to town.
fort adams – home of sail newport, sail to prevail and the museum of yachting. looks like a junior regatta, a nice day on the water….and our first sighting – INDRA, a fine speed machine from marblehead prepping for the newport to bermuda race.
hammersmith farm…you know Jackie O’s place….before she was a Kennedy or an O.
gates + glimpses
lots of renovations on the mansions – we have been to lovely soirees + rockin’ bashes at several of the mansions – and toured others – so given our limited time – we opted out of a mansion tour – maybe during the holidays?
lunch at bowen’s 22 wine bar + grille and then onto the rum runner for a harbor tour….and a bit of a splash – if you haven’t ‘ridin’ the rum runner’ then you have not had a true newport experience – great tour, awesome history, cool + breezy….and quite speedy when it’s ‘kicked up a notch or two’
a few favorite spots on the tour where we have enjoyed some good times – the ida lewis yacht club + the new york yacht club at harbor court.
back on land – a little bit of shopping! may we recommend:
the laura jean denim shop, farmaesthetics, marc allen (for the men) …our favorite cheese + wine shop is no more…but the shop that took its place has these cool seats.
quick stop to check the grass at the tennis hall of fame – billie jean king rocks!
“a room with a view” – love it! the bar at the top of the vanderbilt grace has a cool selection of bubbly including really delicious sparkling roses – uber dry!
dinner at talullah’s on thames – quirky, fun + interesting menu + food (something we find to be a rarity in newport – despite all its grandeur…great dining spots can be a challenge – especially ones that take reservations).
may we recommend:
the attwater hotel (interiors by rachel reider interiors)
the vanderbilt grace – great location, a bit of glam – the wonderful jonathan cartwright restaurant muse and the rooftop bar (especially rose mondays!)
the cliff walk
brenton point state park – best kite flying spot ever
talullah’s – quirky decor, fun menu beautifully prepared
scales – one of my favorite spots (downstairs only – upstairs is too hot! – so unfortunately, no reservations…)
bowen’s 22 wine bar – sit outside along the dock, good drinks – great spot to watch the town happenings
laura jean denim shop on bellevue
the mansions – some of our favorites: Chateau-sur-mer, Marble House (don’t miss the Tea House!), Rosecliff, The Breakers, The Elms…immerse yourself in ‘the gilded age’
an hour or two on the lawn at Castle Hill – adirondack chairs, great drinks + the perfect place to see every yacht coming + going
great drinks, casual atmosphere, lots of yachtsmen + women – cafe zelda
thinking about checking out jamestown – great idea – take the jamestown ferry – nice ride + nice destination!
i think i must get this book – she is wearing that lipstick with great authority!
So, when is the Artefact Lifestyle & Travel Guide coming out?
